Saving money on Azure Backup!

What is Azure Backup?

Azure Backup is a cloud-based backup solution that provides secure, cost-effective, and scalable storage options with three types of replication (LRS, GRS, RA-GRS) to keep data highly available.

Azure Backup also offers a centralized management interface for enterprises to govern, monitor, operate, and analyze backups, as well as independent and isolated backups for virtual machines (VMs).

How do we save?

Let’s look at how we can reduce our usage rate by reserving capacity:

Note that Azure Backup reservations cannot be scoped to a specific resource or resource group; the narrowest scope is at the subscription level.

Azure Backup reservations are applied against the chosen Redundancy, Size, and Region:

The Azure Backup reservation discounts are as follows:

100 TiB (LRS/GRS/RA-GRS) – One Year 12%
1 PiB (LRS/GRS/RA-GRS) – One Year 16%
100 TiB (LRS/GRS/RA-GRS)Three Years 20%
1 PiB (LRS/GRS/RA-GRS) – Three Years24%

The One Year discount isn’t that great (especially if you got a decent Azure discount on Pay-as-you-go), I would look at the Three Year term and then reserve conservatively.
