Azure Data Factory reservations

What is Azure Data Factory?

Azure Data Factory (ADF) is a fully managed, serverless data integration solution for ingesting, preparing, and transforming data.

It offers a code-free UI for authoring and single-pane-of-glass monitoring and management, allowing users to move data between on-premises and cloud systems.

ADF also allows users to lift and shift existing SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) packages to Azure and run them with full compatibility.

Let’s have a look at what the reservations have to offer in this space!

Note that the reservations only apply to the Data Flow (Cluster Configuration) component of Azure Data Factory:

There are two types of reservations available:

When you reserve Data Factory capacity, you buy the capacity for a specific number of cores in a specific region.

As an example, if you are running one General Purpose instance with 8 vCores, you would buy 8 units of the “Data Flow – General Purpose” type.

The discounts are as follows:

  • Data Flow – General Purpose – One Year Term – 25%
  • Data Flow – Memory Optimized – One Year Term – 25%
  • Data Flow – General Purpose – Three Year Term – 35%
  • Data Flow – Memory Optimized – Three Year Term – 35%

The One Year Term options look pretty good to me in terms of the balance between commitment and discount.
