Azure Red Hat OpenShift reservations

What is Azure Red Hat OpenShift?

Azure Red Hat OpenShift is a managed service that offers single-tenant, high-availability Kubernetes clusters on Microsoft Azure.

It is jointly engineered and operated by Microsoft and Red Hat with an integrated support experience, and includes services for maintaining the health and performance of the cluster and its components.

Let’s head over to see what type of reservation discounts we can get from this service!

Azure Red Hat OpenShift has three types of reservations (but the pricing is the same):

With Azure Red Hat OpenShift reservations, you reserve the Worker Nodes:

If you have three E4s v3 Worker Nodes (like in the above screenshot), you would reserve 3 x Azure Red Hat OpenShift Memory Optimized with 4 vCPUs as the VM Size.

Note that the percentage is the same between the types / VM sizes.

The discounts are as follows (discount compared to Retail Pay-As-You-Go):

  • One Year term – 33%
  • Three Year term – 56%

That’s it, pretty decent discounts!

One thing that I don’t like about Azure Red Hat OpenShift is that the available VM SKUs are not that great:

It would be good if new VM SKUs became available shortly after general availability.

I’d like to see Es v5 and Eas v5 on the list to maximize the return on the OpenShift licensing piece.

If you pay a lot of $ for licenses, you’ll want those licenses to run on fast hardware to maximize your return!
