What is Azure Database for MariaDB?

Azure Database for MariaDB is a fully managed database as a service offering based on the open-source MariaDB Server engine.

It works with popular open-source frameworks and languages, and features tight integration with Azure Web Apps.

Compared to Microsoft Azure SQL Database, MariaDB has more powerful open source relational features such as modern SQL and JSON.

Let’s have a look at what reservations it offers!

There are two types of offerings that you can choose between:

  • General Purpose – gives you 5 GB of RAM per 1 vCore
  • Memory Optimized – gives you 10 GB of RAM per 1 vCore

The discounts are as follows (discount compared to Retail Pay-As-You-Go):

  • Azure Database for MariaDB General Purpose – One Year term – 41%
  • Azure Database for MariaDB General Purpose – Three Year term – 60%
  • Azure Database for MariaDB Memory Optimized  – One Year term – 45%
  • Azure Database for MariaDB Memory Optimized – Three Year term – 63%

The discounts are quite good; the One Year term discount is bigger than what you see for most other services.
