What is Azure Database for MySQL?
Azure Database for MySQL is a fully managed database service, powered by the MySQL Community Edition and supports versions 5.6, 5.7, and 8.0.
It provides users with a fully functional, fully managed relational MySQL database in the cloud.

Azure Database for MySQL has the following options when it comes to reserving this service:
- Flexible Server Business Critical Compute
- Flexible Server General Purpose Ddsv4 Series Compute
- Single Server General Purpose – Compute Gen5
- Single Server Memory Optimized – Compute Gen5
The Flexible Server option gives you more customization options such as custom maintenance windows, the ability to start/stop the instance, zone-redundant deployment options and more.
The Single Server option gives you a pre-configured instance and set maintenance windows. It is a more basic service in terms of functionality compared to Flexible Server.
Single Server only has the One Year term option available when purchasing reservations.
The discounts are as follows (discount compared to Retail Pay-As-You-Go):
- Flexible Server Business Critical Compute – One Year term – 45%
- Flexible Server Business Critical Compute – Three Year term – 63%
- Flexible Server General Purpose Ddsv4 Series Compute – One Year term – 40%
- Flexible Server General Purpose Ddsv4 Series Compute – Three Year Term – 60%
- Single Server General Purpose – Compute Gen5 – One Year term – 41%
- Single Server Memory Optimized – Compute Gen5 – One Year term – 45%
Note that the unit that is used is the no. of vCores you have provisioned.
As an example, if you have a General Purpose Flexible Server with 8 vCores, you would type in a Quantity of 8 when you purchase a reservation.
