What is Azure Synapse Analytics (data warehousing only)?

Azure Synapse Analytics (data warehousing only) refers to dedicated SQL pools (formerly SQL DW), which represents a collection of analytic resources that are provisioned when using Synapse SQL.

The size of a dedicated SQL pool (formerly SQL DW) is determined by Data Warehousing Units (DWU).

The dedicated SQL pool allows you to import big data with simple PolyBase T-SQL queries, and then use the power of the distributed query engine to run high-performance analytics.

These reservations are pretty straight-forward; you will buy the no. of DW100c‘s (Data Warehouse Units) that you need for a particular Region.

One Year and Three Year terms are available.

If your SQL pools are consuming 2000 DWU’s, you would purchase 20 units of DW100c’s.

The discounts are as follows (discount compared to Retail Pay-As-You-Go):

  • DW100c – One Year term – 37%
  • DW100c – Three Year term – 65%

The three year discount looks pretty good to me!
